Stuck in Team Win Recovery Project after attempting update to Android 9

Which version of the software are you running?

I was running Android 7 and wanted to update to 9.

Edit by Gabe

Both users were running a version of Fairphone OS which came with TWRP. So not 19.11.2. Also, after some manual testing on a couple of devices, there is no indication that a phone not running 19.11.2. would propose the Android 9

What happened?

After the update and the restart, the phone is stuck in Team Win Recovery Project. When I went to "reboot" it said there was no OS on the phone.

Running theory

The user launched the update to 19.11.2. from an earlier version of Android 7. Something went wrong during the installation, and the phone got stuck without a bootable OS. The A9 update doesn't appear to have anything to do with this problem.

Workaround/solution

  • Manually flash the phone with the latest Android 7 package.
  • Perform a factory reset
