Update to Android 9 failed. The device does not boot properly anymore

Which version of the software are you running?

Updating from Android 7 to Android 9

What happened?

I started to update the Android 9 on my Fariphone 2. During the update, I saw an error message for a few seconds, then the phone restarted. The phone is now stuck on the black screen with the Fairphone logo.

Expected behavior

The update should have successfully installed Android 9

Is there a workaround?

  • Try to flash the phone manually to the latest available Android 9 release.
NOTE: the first boot after flashing the phone can take a while. Be patient.
  • If the flashing operation is successful, but the phone still does not boot properly, you can perform a factory reset via recovery.
NOTE: the first boot after a factory reset can take up to ten minutes.

Need help with the manual flashing procedure?

Quick tips:

  • If the phone is not being recognized
    • If you are using Windows, you might be missing the correct drivers. Read this support article for instructions on how to check for driver updates
    • Make sure the USB cable you are using is working properly
  • If the flashing process fails while writing to the phone:
    • Writing issue on the system partition (e.g. 'flash write failure'):
      • Check your cables
      • Make sure you are not using USB adapters or hubs
      • Power cycle the device, then try again
    • Parsing issue when flashing aboot(i.e. Couldn't parse partition size '0x')
      • You are likely using macOS or Linux
      • You are using a locally installed version of fastboot which is too recent (yes, you read that right 😅)
      • If on macOS, use the .command script instead of the .sh. This will use the fastboot binary that comes with the package.
      • If on Linux, you'll have to downgrade to an older version of fastboot. Version 29.0.1-5644136 or older should work.
